Security made amazingly simple
Introducing HID EDGE SOLO IP, PoE
latest access
control system. EDGE IP, PoE takes
advantage of technology utilizing the Ethernet to carry both
power
and data to the
door controller. HID EDGE is really next evolution in access control
solutions. A true IP, PoE design provides fully distributed
intelligence and decision making right at the door, leveraging IP
structure to the maximum extend possible. EDGE power comes through
single CAT5 (5e, 6) run to the door. From reader, to strike, REX and
other devices everything is available to installer.
STEP BY STEP ACTIONS >
We decided to connect one EDGE
SOLO PLUS with separate card reader "just to make it harder". If EDGE
SOLO (integrated R40 card reader) is installed, there are even fewer
steps to be made. We also used standard power supply. In case
of PoE it would be enough to plug in Ethernet connection and that would
make both Ethernet and power available to the controller.

Upper RH terminal block, 2

Connected 12VDC power supply
lead, watch polarity!

2
|
RH
terminal block, 12 wires, we used ProxPoint reader, but conections are
always the same for all HID readers |
Connected
(L to R) red, black, green, white wires. This makes RFID reader
functional. Skip one. Optional: orange and brown wires are for LED
color control |
3
|
RH terminal block, 12 wires |
You can connect yellow wire
if you want beeper control, that is optional |
| 4 |
Middle,
LH side, relays jumpers |
Move
them all to RH position that feeds power for door lock to output
relays. Otherwise, don't touch those and use dry NC, NO relay contacts |
| 5 |
LH lower terminal block |
Just plug it in, it has door
monitor sensor jumper already in place |
| 6 |
Ethernet
feed |
We
used regular patch cable and plugged other end into the Mac laptop |
| 7 |
LH upper terminal block, lock |
Connect two leads to Relay 2
COM and NO receptacles. This wire goes to door strike |
| 8 |
Power

Plug
it into the wall receptacle or backup P/S |

In
address bar type 169.254.242.121, that is default IP address of the
EDGE controller |

After few moments EDGE will
ask for login info, user is "admin", leave password blank |
| 11 |
You
are in! Start managing the system |
First
page is software disclaimer page, just click OK or ACCEPT |
| 12 |
Personalizing the system |
As installer you have to
introduce installer's password so nobody else can make changes to the
system, write down that password! |
| 13 |
Start
with time and date |
Under
INSTALLER SETTINGS (tab on the RH side) select time and date, confirm
or change to proper time and time zone. Watch, time is right below the
calendar screen. Small numbers, should be bigger. Save changes |
| 14 |
Card formats |
Under CARDS/PINS tab click
link card formats than ADD FORMAT. From template drop down menu select
H10301, name it similar like that and SAVE. Also add H10302 format.
Those 2 formats you will be using all the time |
| 15 |
Add
card holders |
Click
tab PEOPLE, enter at least last name, click SAVE, ASSIGN CARD NOW. |
| 16 |
Still adding card holder |
In next screen from drop
down menu choose NEW CARD, select format, enter card number, decide if
card shall expire at certain date or not, click SAVE THEN ASSIGN
SCHEDULE |
| 17 |
Assign
schedule |
In
next screen select one of the predefined schedules or create and use new one |
| 18 |
Test card |
You are DONE, card is
working! |
USEFUL NOTES
That is about it. Now you have
working card access system for one door. You can add as many doors as
you want. Do that by simply adding more kits, always one per
door.
Click
TAB HOME SCREEN. That might be most useful screen with common tasks.
Pay attention on the left side of the screen. That is a live event
screen. If you are on-line with EDGE controller you will be able to see
users as they unlock the door. That window also displays errors, all in real time.
Cumulative
activity reports you can see under REPORTS TAB.
If
you ordered magnetic door contact it is beneficial to use it. EDGE
likes to know if door is forced open and will beep and warn in that
case.
Also,
very useful button on the LH side is GRANT ACCESS and DOOR UNLOCK. You
can manually open door to somebody standing there. If you used DOOR
UNLOCK don't forget to lock it back using same button since it works as
toggle switch.
When
entering H10301 format for the first time system will ask about FC
(Facility Code). Those are extra 3 digits stored in the card. That
setup increases security and prevents accidental duplication
of the cards. H10301 is standard Wiegand 26 bit format. Many access
card systems are using that format as default. When ordering 26 bit
cards from Almex you will always get FC information written on the
packing slip!
Very
useful! H10302 is HID 37 bit format with no FC. Main benefit of this
format is that serial card numbers NEVER repeat! You can't get into
situation to get duplicated card numbers. Otherwise with all other card
formats somebody must record a list of card numbers used so you don't
run into duplicates. Not so important with smaller systems but it may
become a problem with bigger ones.
Connecting
EDGE directly into laptop opens new possibilites to install and manage
remote locations with no Ethernet infra structure. For example use EDGE
at the gate in closed community or swimming pool or remote cell tower.
To do changes it is enough to plug EDGE directly into the laptop's
Ethernet port, perform management tasks and disconnect. Operator walks
away and EDGE will stay working with new settings.
If
EDGE is connected to network easiest way to connect to it is to run
discovery utility, free download at HID site. It will quickly identify
all EDGE controllers found on given network.
With
EDGE it is possible to use DHCP to get IP address or change to fixed IP
address settings. Second option makes easy to handle unit at later day
or every day. It also may enable authorized user to access it from
Internet from home and do management, watch events as they happen or
even temporarity unlock door to someone without issuing an access card
(service person, delivery ...).
Useful
feature is also expiry date that you can enter for any card. You could
issue visitor's card or temporary card to anyone and be sure that it
will expire even if person walks away without returning a card!
Remember,
card, keyfob tag, sticky tag, printable card is all the same - the
credential. They all have same chip inside regardless of the phyisical
appearance
